[Financial News] A 35-week-pregnant woman whose waters broke in Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, safely gave birth after being transported by fire service helicopter to Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, about 150 km away, after 25 hospitals across the country said they would have difficulty accepting her.
According to Yonhap News, News1 and other outlets on the 8th, at around 2:07 a.m. on the 1st, a woman in her 30s who was 35 weeks pregnant, identified as Ms. A, called 119 from Anseong, Gyeonggi Province, saying, “My waters are leaking.”
Emergency responders, judging that premature rupture of membranes posed a high risk of preterm birth and fetal infection, searched for a hospital that would accept Ms. A. They contacted 25 hospitals in Gyeonggi Province, Seoul and the Chungcheong region, including hospitals operating the support program for integrated treatment centers for high-risk mothers and newborns, but all said it would be difficult to accommodate her.
This was because it was difficult to immediately secure the medical staff and beds needed to provide both delivery care for a high-risk pregnancy and intensive care for a newborn.
At around 3:30 a.m. that day, the National Fire Agency requested assistance from Jesus Hospital in Jeonju. After the hospital agreed to accept her, Ms. A traveled from Anseong to Jeonju aboard a fire service helicopter.
Ms. A traveled about 150 km and arrived at Jesus Hospital at around 5:16 a.m., where she gave birth safely by emergency cesarean section. The mother and baby were both reportedly recovering in good health.
Hong Sang-gi, head of the obstetrics and gynecology department at Jesus Hospital, who performed the surgery, said, “The departments of obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, anesthesiology and pain medicine, and others worked closely together to save the lives of both the mother and baby,” adding, “Jesus Hospital will continue to fulfill its mission of saving lives in any crisis situation.”
