[Financial News] It has been confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump has been campaigning in suits from a mid-to-low-priced brand. Some have questioned whether this runs counter to the Trump administration’s America First stance, given that the products are made overseas, including in China.
According to Forbes and other outlets, President Trump briefly opened his suit jacket at a campaign rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, on the evening of the 5th local time, revealing the brand name on the inside pocket. The suit he was wearing was from Jos. A. Bank, a brand under the American company Tailored Brands.
Suits on Jos. A. Bank’s website are priced at around $260 (about 350,000 won), placing them in the relatively affordable mid-to-low range. The specific price of the suit President Trump actually wore that day has not been confirmed.
Men’s clothing expert Derek Guy wrote on X, his social media account, “Interesting. All Jos. A. Bank suits are made overseas, mainly in countries such as China and Bangladesh,” he said.
He added that Jos. A. Bank “has an affiliated brand, Joseph Abboud, whose products are made in the United States,” and stressed, “I wonder why President Trump chose cheaper imports instead of an American-made suit.”
President Trump has criticized manufacturers that move production overseas. In his speech that day, he also boasted that, in his second term, he is bringing manufacturers back to the United States.
The Daily Beast called it “ironic,” noting that “President Trump’s attire was in clear contradiction to his usual economic messaging.”
According to The New York Times (NYT), during his first term President Trump mainly wore suits by Italian luxury brand Brioni and favored suits by Martin Greenfield Clothiers, which is headquartered in New York.
In his book “Trump: Think Like a Billionaire,” President Trump said he was given Brioni suits while filming the reality TV show The Apprentice in the 2000s, and once remarked, “I wear Brioni suits off the rack.”
The least expensive suit sold on Brioni’s website starts at $5,500 (about 7.38 million won), while the most expensive costs as much as $16,000 (about 21.46 million won).
