[Financial News] An elementary school student who assaulted a homeroom teacher by grabbing the teacher by the hair and kicking them has ultimately been ordered to transfer to another school. This is the most severe measure that can be imposed on an elementary school student.
According to Newsis and other outlets on the 7th, the Cheongju Office of Education Support held a School Rights Protection Committee meeting on the 23rd of last month and decided that A, a fifth-grade girl at an elementary school in Cheongju, should transfer schools and undergo 10 hours of special education.
Under the Act on the Status of Teachers, there are seven types of measures for students who infringe on educational activities. However, elementary school students cannot be expelled under the seventh measure. Accordingly, A received the sixth-level measure, a transfer, which is the most severe measure the School Rights Protection Committee can impose.
The Cheongju Office of Education reportedly also notified A’s parents that they must complete five hours of special education.
On the 1st of last month, A swore at B, her homeroom teacher in their 60s, who had been hired on a fixed-term basis, in a fifth-grade classroom at an elementary school in Cheongju, saying the test paper was dirty. The next day, she assaulted B by kicking B and pulling B's hair. She also punched and kicked the vice principal, principal and head of student affairs as they tried to stop her. Video of the assaults spread through media reports at the time, sparking controversy.
The school imposed a 20-day suspension from attendance on A as an emergency measure by the principal.
The day after the incident, A’s parents filed a police complaint accusing B, her homeroom teacher, the vice principal and a fellow teacher of child abuse.
The complaint reportedly alleged that a teacher gave A a test paper with scribbles on it, refused to replace it when asked, and instead raised their voice. It also reportedly stated that the vice principal made remarks to the child at the time of the incident that amounted to emotional abuse.
The Cheongju Office of Education is expected to convene a meeting of its school transfer and enrollment support team soon to decide which school A will transfer to.
