Kim Seong-gon, a specialist in classical Chinese poetry, visits Shaanxi Province, home to Chang'an, the Tang dynasty capital, and Sichuan Province, steeped in the literary works of Du Fu and Su Shi. At Huaqing Pool in Xi'an, he reads Bai Juyi's “Song of Everlasting Sorrow,” and explores the poets' lives and works at Du Fu Thatched Cottage in Chengdu and Sansu Temple in Meishan.
The book introduces classical Chinese poems by Li Bai, Du Fu, Wang Wei, Bai Juyi and others, and also recounts stories associated with historic sites. It covers the love between Emperor Xuanzong and Yang Guifei, Wu Zetian's rule, and the trails left by heroes of the Three Kingdoms. Rather than stopping at translating and explaining the poems, it offers a multifaceted look at Chinese literature and history by connecting the era in which the works were created with the scenery at the sites.
