【Hanoi, Vietnam—Correspondent Kim Jun-seok】Vingroup, Vietnam’s largest private company, has joined forces with global rail technology company Alstom to develop Hanoi’s next-generation urban railway, entering into cooperation on the supply of rolling stock and the transfer of technology usage rights.
According to local media on the 7th, Vingroup officially signed a contract with Alstom the previous day in Hanoi for the supply of metro trains for the Hanoi urban railway project, along with a technology licensing agreement.
Under the agreement, Alstom will transfer the relevant technology to enable metro trains to be manufactured and assembled locally in Vietnam, and will supply a total of 200 Metropolis trainsets to facilitate the early launch of Hanoi’s urban railway project. Designed and built by Alstom, the trains are next-generation models consisting of five cars per trainset, with an optimized design and high operational efficiency and safety. In particular, they will use a fully automated, driverless operation system (GoA4), the highest level of automation.
The supply will be carried out in two stages. First, the initial batch of 83 cars will be manufactured directly at Alstom’s specialized metro production facility in Valenciennes, France. The remaining 117 cars will be produced and assembled locally under Vingroup’s leadership, with Alstom providing technical know-how, specialized engineering support, and key equipment and components.
The cooperation between Vingroup and Alstom is seen as an important turning point that will strengthen the self-reliance of Vietnam’s rail industry ecosystem and lay the groundwork for its modernization. The two sides expect it to provide a basis for building a long-term industrial partnership and expanding Vietnam’s participation in global railway value chains.
