[Financial News] LG Electronics is moving to reduce carbon emissions in residential spaces through wider deployment of heat pumps and integrated energy management in homes. It plans to expand its domestic heat pump production base and extend their use to public rental housing and newly built and existing multi-family housing.
LG Electronics announced this mid- to long-term roadmap on the 7th at the National Briefing on the Korean Green Transformation (K-GX) Strategy, held at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Seoul, where it participated as the representative company in the “GX Expansion in People’s Living Spaces” sector.
Lee Jae-seong, head of LG Electronics’ ES Business Division, emphasized that the key to the green transformation of residential spaces is shifting from fossil-fuel-centered heating systems to high-efficiency heat pumps and integrating the management of energy production, storage and consumption.
LG Electronics presented the energy self-sufficient modular home LG Smart Cottage as its flagship model. LG Smart Cottage is a residential solution that connects heat pumps, home appliances, a home energy management system (HEMS), energy storage systems (ESS) and solar power generation on a single platform. By optimizing energy production and consumption, it reduces carbon emissions and increases energy self-sufficiency. A key part of the roadmap is linking the electrification of heating systems with energy management throughout the home.
LG Electronics plans to pursue initiatives including participation in projects to develop energy self-sufficient residential complexes in distributed energy special zones, using heat pumps and LG Smart Cottage. It will also expand its domestic heat pump production base, centered on its Changwon plant.
In the long term, LG Electronics plans to standardize heat pump conversions and energy management methods for different types of housing. It aims to extend their use beyond public rental housing to newly built and existing multi-family housing, and to promote energy self-sufficient “net-zero” residential complex models.
Demonstrations for use in multi-family housing are also underway. LG Electronics is working with Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, Jeju Development Corporation and the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology on a demonstration project that installs heat pumps in apartment complexes where residents actually live, electrifying heating, cooling and hot water supply.
Based on operating data collected during the demonstrations, LG Electronics plans to develop a “boiler-free apartment” model that can be applied to public rental housing, renovations of existing homes and newly built complexes.
LG Electronics was recently assigned responsibility for 877 of the 2,460 households covered by the government’s heating electrification initiative, the “2026 Jeju Everyday Heat Pump Deployment Program.” This is the largest allocation among participating companies.
LG Electronics has been in Korea’s heat pump system boiler business since 2011. In 2018, it became the first domestic manufacturer to supply an all-in-one residential heat pump system boiler. The company says its flagship product, the LG Therma V Heat Pump Boiler, uses heat from the air to produce up to four to five times as much thermal energy as the electricity it consumes.
Through its heat pump and energy self-sufficient housing businesses, LG Electronics also aims to revitalize local economies and foster shared growth with small and midsize partner companies. It plans to support workers in the conventional boiler industry as they transition to new work, and to ease energy cost burdens by expanding heat pump deployment in energy-vulnerable areas, including rural and fishing communities. The company also plans to expand its global market presence based on the technologies and business models it has developed in Korea.
