[Financial News] Busan’s Gijang County said on the 7th that it had officially asked the National Tax Service to establish a ‘Gijang Branch of Geumjeong Tax Office’ to ease the burden on local taxpayers.
Gijang County’s population has recently surpassed 175,000 amid ongoing urban development, including the development of the Osiria Tourist Complex, the Jeonggwan and Ilgwang New Towns, and the Southeastern Region Nuclear Medicine and Science General Industrial Complex. As a result, it is one of the areas seeing a steady rise in demand for national tax administration services.
However, Gijang County currently has no tax office, so people who need in-person administrative services such as national tax filings and consultations have to visit the Geumjeong Tax Office and other offices outside the county. Residents and business owners in northeastern areas such as Jangan-eup reportedly have to travel at least 30 km by car each way.
Tax branch offices have been operating since 2022 in Ulju County in Ulsan and Dalseong County in Daegu, which, like Gijang County, are county-level areas within metropolitan cities. Accordingly, on the 30th of last month, the county submitted a proposal to establish a Gijang Branch of the Geumjeong Tax Office to the National Tax Service and the Busan Regional Tax Office.
The county plans to work with the Gijang County Council and the local community to actively pursue the establishment of a tax branch office in the county.
County Governor Woo Seong-bin said, “Although electronic national tax administration services such as Hometax are expanding, demand remains for in-person administrative services, including applications for the Earned Income Tax Credit and national tax filings and consultations. Steps still remain before the Gijang branch can be established, including review by the National Tax Service, an organizational and staffing review by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and budget-related procedures at the Ministry of Planning and Budget. I will work closely with the relevant ministries and do my utmost to ensure the Gijang branch is established.”
