[Financial News, Ulsan = Reporter Choi Soo-sang] To mark the 580th Hangul Day and the 100th anniversary of its establishment, a range of events for children and teenagers will be held in Ulsan, hometown of the Hangul scholar Oesol Choi Hyeon-bae.
According to Ulsan’s Jung-gu district and others on the 7th, the Oesol Memorial Hall, which operates near the birthplace of Choi Hyeon-bae in Byeongyeong 1-dong, Jung-gu, will host a variety of Hangul-themed activities and events throughout October.
On Hangul Day, the 9th, the Oesol Hangul Hanmadang will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Oesol Memorial Hall under the theme “Oesol’s Dream, Blooming in Hangul.”
A variety of activities are planned, including performances for children such as magic shows and storytelling, as well as a giant crossword puzzle, Hangul games and writing activities, and making Hangul-themed snacks and dalgona.
Photo spots decorated with Hangul letters, including the “Consonant Welcome Gate” and “Hangul Sky Garden,” have also been set up.
On the 17th and 24th, the Oesol Saturday Baegot “Hangul Day Commemorative Class” will be offered for elementary school students. In the class, students will make cookies using Hangul consonants and vowels and Korean words they like. Participants can register on the Oesol Memorial Hall website or in person on the day of the class.
On weekends, a hands-on Hangul hat-making program will be held in the Children’s Activity Room at the Oesol Memorial Hall.
Traditional games will also be available on an ongoing basis in the outdoor plaza in front of Oesol Choi Hyeon-bae’s birthplace, including giant yutnori, hopscotch, tuho (arrow throwing), ring toss and ttakji flipping.
On Hangul Day, a planned performance of the fantasy family opera “Mysterious Time Travel” will take place at the Ulsan Jung-gu Culture and Arts Center. It is an original cultural production that reimagines, with a modern sensibility, the creation and proclamation of Hangul by Sejong the Great. On the night before Sejong the Great is due to proclaim Hunminjeongeum, its key record, the “Hunminjeongeum Haeryebon,” suddenly goes missing. At the same time, two modern-day girls, “Luna” and “Dami,” fall into the pond at Gyeonghoeru Pavilion in Gyeongbokgung Palace and travel back in time to the Joseon era. The story follows their exciting adventure as they help Sejong the Great find the missing Haeryebon.
From the 9th to the 11th, the Ulsan Municipal Children’s Theme Park, run by the Ulsan Facilities Corporation, will host “Reading the Childlike Heart,” an outdoor library where children can experience the value of Hangul through books and play. Children can create works using designs of Sejong the Great and Hunminjeongeum, and learn the shapes and principles of the Korean writing system through hands-on activities.
