KOSPI retreats to 6,800 amid foreign selling of around 2.2 trillion won [fn Afternoon Market Report]

[Financial News] The KOSPI fell below 6,900, pressured by foreign selling of around 2.2 trillion won. Caution appears to be deepening ahead of Samsung Electronics’ preliminary earnings.
According to the Korea Exchange, as of 1:59 p.m. on the 7th, the KOSPI was trading at 6,845.39, down 96.00 points (1.38%) from the previous day.
On the KOSPI market, individual investors were net buyers of 2.317 trillion won, while foreign investors and institutions were net sellers of 2.23 trillion won and 669.7 billion won, respectively.
By sector, medical and precision instruments (8.76%), entertainment and culture (4.32%), and textiles and apparel (1.84%) were among the strongest performers, while metals (-3.55%), transportation equipment and parts (-2.94%), and machinery and equipment (-2.01%) were among the weakest.
Among the largest stocks by market capitalization, KB Financial Group (1.08%), LG Energy Solution (1.03%), and Celltrion (0.60%) were among the gainers, while Hanwha Aerospace (-3.91%), HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (-3.69%), and Samsung Electro-Mechanics (-2.87%) were among the decliners.
The two leading large-cap semiconductor stocks were also falling. Samsung Electronics was trading at 271,500 won, down 500 won (0.18%) from the previous day, while SK hynix was at 1,739,000 won, down 34,000 won (1.92%).
At the same time, the KOSDAQ was trading at 904.14, down 15.78 points (1.72%) from the previous day. Individual investors were net buyers of 539.1 billion won, while foreign investors and institutions were net sellers of 367.3 billion won and 145.3 billion won, respectively.
Kang Jin-hyuk, an analyst at Shinhan Securities, said, "With no major macroeconomic events, the KOSPI fell below 6,900 amid cautious trading ahead of Samsung Electronics’ preliminary earnings," adding, "On the KOSDAQ, selling pressure is emerging in large-cap stocks, including those in materials, parts and equipment and secondary batteries."
