[Financial News] CCTV footage showing patients receiving treatment or changing clothes at medical institutions in South Korea, including OB-GYN clinics, has been circulated on illegal websites overseas, prompting a police investigation.
According to Yonhap News Agency on the 6th, the National Police Agency received a request for an investigation into allegations of hacking and leaking medical institution CCTV footage from Democratic Party of Korea lawmaker Heo Jong-sik on the 29th of last month, and assigned the case to the Chungbuk Provincial Police Agency.
An investigation by Heo’s office found that overseas pornography sites contained as many as 80 videos showing patients receiving treatment or changing clothes at South Korean OB-GYN clinics, plastic surgery clinics, Korean medicine clinics, rehabilitation medicine departments and other facilities.
Of these, 21 videos were reportedly linked to Clinic A, an OB-GYN clinic in Seoul.
Most of the leaked footage is believed to have been recorded using Internet Protocol (IP) cameras, whose security vulnerabilities have repeatedly been flagged.
Last year, police arrested four suspects accused of being the first to hack the footage and distribute and sell it on illegal websites.
At the time, police requested that access to websites hosting numerous illegally filmed videos, including the footage in question, be blocked and took steps to protect the victims.
However, the footage was reportedly reposted on other websites even after the initial distributor was arrested.
Lawmaker Heo said, “How can people feel safe going to a hospital when even footage of them receiving treatment and changing clothes is circulating?” He added, “The Ministry of Health and Welfare should conduct a comprehensive survey of CCTV security at medical institutions and immediately work with the police and other relevant agencies to determine how the footage was leaked, remove it, and protect the victims.”
Police plan to investigate those who reposted the footage.
