[The Financial News] In the age of artificial intelligence (AI), a public marine surveying agency has developed and begun using programs to make it easier to manage vast amounts of marine observation data.

The Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency said on the 7th that it had recently developed a “Temperature and Salinity Data Processing Simplification Program” and a “Marine Science Survey Data List Management Program,” drawing on the AI skills of young interns.
The Temperature and Salinity Data Processing Simplification Program has improved processing speed by automating in a single batch—with one click of a button—a manual process that previously took nine steps to handle marine observation data. The Data List Management Program also automatically compares and checks marine science survey data lists from 25 industry, academic and research institutions provided by the agency, identifying errors and improving management efficiency.
The development and operation of these AI programs are expected to significantly reduce the time needed to process marine observation data, including temperature and salinity data. The agency said it was now able to provide the public with the latest observation data more quickly.
The agency plans to make the relevant observation data, processed quickly by the program, readily accessible to everyone through its “Bada Nuri Marine Information” service. It also expects that providing error-free marine science survey data lists on the “Open Sea” platform will help everyone, including researchers, make more accurate use of marine information in waters under the agency’s jurisdiction.
Meanwhile, the program was developed by two young interns working at the agency’s Marine Science Survey Research Office, using a “conversational coding (vibe coding)” approach in which they used generative AI to write code.
KHOA head Jang Myo-in said, “I am pleased that our young intern program has gone beyond a simple administrative work experience and created an opportunity for young people’s fresh perspectives and AI skills to come together with our agency’s work, enabling mutual growth.” Jang added, “We will continue to make improvements to increase the efficiency of marine surveying work and provide the public with better marine information services.”[email protected] Byeon Ok-hwan Reporter
