[Financial News] Porsche is bringing the latest infotainment features to 911, Boxster and Cayman models up to 16 years old. It has upgraded a retrofit system so that even owners of older cars can use the latest digital features, including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and wireless map updates. The strategy is to enhance digital convenience while preserving the character of classic models, expanding the ownership experience for existing customers.
On the 7th, Porsche AG unveiled the next-generation Porsche Classic Communication Management Plus (PCCM Plus) for 2009–2016 model-year 911, Boxster and Cayman vehicles.
The new PCCM Plus is designed to integrate more closely with existing vehicle architectures. It features a 7-inch touchscreen, and in vehicles equipped with a multifunction steering wheel, key functions can also be controlled using the steering-wheel buttons.
The vehicles’ existing personalization settings are retained. Drivers can view navigation directions and information about the music playing on the instrument cluster, offering a user experience similar to that of the latest Porsche models.
Smartphone connectivity has also been significantly enhanced. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto can be connected wirelessly via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. YouTube video playback while the vehicle is stationary is also supported where local laws allow it.
Visual integration with the vehicle has also been improved. The virtual car displayed on the screen can be shown in the same Porsche exterior color as the actual vehicle.
The range of driving-related information has also been expanded. The system displays speed limits based on map data, and the trip screen also shows oil temperature and pressure.
Parking assistance is further enhanced for the Boxster and Cayman. Previously, the system used voice prompts only to warn of approaching obstacles, but the new PCCM Plus also displays the distance between an obstacle and the vehicle on screen.
The navigation system now includes satellite imagery as well as a “Scenic Roads” feature. It recommends routes suited to driving, taking into account winding roads and panoramic views.
Connectivity and audio features have also been updated. The system has a nano SIM card slot that supports 4G and an interface for connecting external media devices, while map data can be updated wirelessly over the air (OTA).
The system is compatible with 991.1- and 981-generation models from the 2012–2016 model years, and 997.2- and 987.2-generation models from 2009–2013, covering the 911, Boxster and Cayman. Porsche expects that the new system can be installed in at least 300,000 vehicles worldwide.
PCCM Plus is available in two versions for different vehicle models and can be installed through official Porsche service centers. The availability of some features and services varies depending on vehicle specifications and regulations in each country, as well as whether an internet connection is available.
Porsche is expanding the latest digital features to older models, strengthening its aftersales strategy to extend the lifecycle of vehicles owned by existing customers, in addition to new-car sales. The approach preserves the design and driving character of classic models while bringing their connected features up to date.
