According to the biotech industry on the 7th, Lotte Biologics signed a manufacturing contract with Alvotech at CPHI Milan 2026, a global pharmaceutical and biotech exhibition held in Milan, Italy.
Under the agreement, Lotte Biologics will manufacture active pharmaceutical ingredients for multiple antibody biosimilars developed by Alvotech at its production facility in Syracuse, New York. The specific product names and contract value were not disclosed under confidentiality provisions.
Commercial supply is expected to begin after procedures including technology transfer, manufacturing qualification assessment and approval from the relevant regulatory authorities.
The contract is significant because Lotte Biologics will use the existing capacity at its Syracuse plant to expand production volumes for external customers. The Syracuse facility has a total production capacity of 40,000 liters and capabilities in process development, quality control and commercial biopharmaceutical manufacturing. It recently passed an unannounced inspection by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with no observations.
The contract will also give Alvotech additional production capacity in the US. The company plans to add Lotte Biologics’ Syracuse plant to its own facilities and existing manufacturing partners to keep pace with the growing number of biosimilar products and global demand.
Lotte Biologics says that if the scale of cooperation expands, it could also establish a “dual-site” production system linking Syracuse and the Songdo Bio Campus. Once the Songdo Bio Campus, which is currently under construction, becomes operational, the company will be able to use production bases in both the US and South Korea.
Lotte Biologics CEO James Park said, “We expect Alvotech’s expertise in biosimilar development and Lotte Biologics’ global commercial manufacturing capabilities to create synergies.” He added, “As the scale of our cooperation expands, we will support a production system linking Syracuse and Songdo.”
