Wall Street’s three major indexes continued to rise on the 6th (local time). The Nasdaq Composite set a record for the second straight day, while the S&P 500 also set a new all-time high for the first time in about two months.
Nvidia, meanwhile, notched an all-time high for the fourth straight day, but semiconductor stocks lost their early momentum and edged lower.
A streak of record highs
The tech-heavy S&P 500 joined the Nasdaq in its streak of record highs.
The S&P 500 rose 44.98 points (0.58%) from the previous session to 7,818.93. It surpassed its all-time high for the first time in about two months, since August 13.
The Nasdaq jumped 122.48 points (0.45%) to close at 27,599.79, setting an all-time high for the second straight day.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), comprising 30 blue-chip stocks, rose 253.38 points (0.49%) to close at 51,521.28. Its record closing high of 54,349.12, set on August 5, remains far above that level.
The Nasdaq 100, comprising 100 large-cap technology stocks, rose 148.03 points (0.48%) to 31,224.47. TQQQ, a leveraged exchange-traded fund (ETF) that tracks three times the index’s daily moves, gained $1.13 (1.36%) to close at $84.25.
Nvidia hits all-time highs for four straight days
Semiconductor stocks were mixed. They rose early in the session, but their gains later narrowed, and a succession of stocks eventually turned lower.
Nvidia, the sector’s bellwether, extended to a fourth day the streak of record highs that began on the 1st, but it lacked the strength to lift the semiconductor sector as a whole. Nvidia closed up $0.34 (0.14%) at $239.24.
Micron, by contrast, fell $18.40 (1.73%) to $1,045.56, while Intel plunged $3.69 (3.18%) to close at $112.50. SK Hynix’s American depositary receipts (ADRs) tumbled $12.46 (6.39%) to $182.56.
SOXL, a leveraged ETF that tracks three times the daily moves of 30 major semiconductor stocks, briefly climbed as much as 3.4% to $169.83 early in the session but ended slightly lower. It closed down $0.01 (0.01%) at $164.26.
Constellation Energy surges
Constellation Energy, which owns the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant, surged $32.78 (12.25%) to $300.40.
A catalyst for the surge was Google’s agreement to receive power from a Constellation nuclear plant for its AI data centers over the next 20 years.
Google parent Alphabet closed up $1.21 (0.35%) at $347.68.
Big Tech stocks generally performed well: Apple closed up $0.74 (0.22%) at $333.63, while Palantir rose $2.67 (1.41%) to $192.07.
