Korea Zinc said it held a memorial service marking the first anniversary of honorary chairman Choi Chang-geol’s death at its headquarters in Jongno-gu, Seoul, on the 6th. About 130 people attended, including bereaved family members such as Korea Zinc Chairman Choi Yun-beom, Korea Zinc and affiliate employees including Vice Chairman Lee Jae-jung, and the deceased’s acquaintances.
The service proceeded with a biographical overview, a memorial video, a memorial address and remarks by a family representative. Korea Zinc President and CEO Park Ki-deok read the memorial address on behalf of employees, and Chairman Choi Yun-beom delivered a message of thanks on behalf of the bereaved family.
The honorary chairman died on October 6 last year at the age of 84. The second son of the late Choi Ki-ho, founder of Korea Zinc, he took part in founding the company in 1974 and went on to oversee its overall management, laying the groundwork for its growth into a global nonferrous metals smelting company.
In particular, he took the lead in securing business funding during the establishment of Korea Zinc. In Korea, he raised funds through the National Investment Fund and the Korea Development Bank (KDB), among others, while overseas he secured financing from the World Bank Group’s International Finance Corporation (IFC).
Attendees at the service held an unveiling ceremony for a bust of the deceased at the headquarters. The bereaved family and company executives then went to the family burial site at Maseok Moran Park in Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, where they paid their respects at the grave and held a ceremony to unveil a memorial stele.
