【Financial News, Yangyang = Kim Gi-seop】Regular flights from Yangyang International Airport in Gangwon Province to Shanghai Pudong Airport in China will take to the skies every Monday and Friday starting this December.
Parata Air said on the 6th that it plans to operate the Yangyang–Shanghai route twice a week starting in December, using A320-200 aircraft. The date of the first flight will be finalized within this month after consultations with relevant agencies. The launch will reopen regular international air service at Yangyang Airport, which had been suspended for a long time.
Parata Air revived regular domestic service at Yangyang Airport by launching the Yangyang–Jeju route in September last year. Just over a year after taking its first step with domestic routes, the airline is now expanding into international service.
Shanghai is a leading economic and tourist city in China, with active people-to-people exchanges with South Korea. With direct flights, Gangwon residents will be able to travel abroad without going to Incheon or Gimpo, and it will become much easier for Chinese tourists to visit Gangwon Province. An increase in Chinese visitors to Seoraksan and East Sea coast destinations such as Sokcho, Yangyang and Gangneung is expected to invigorate the local economy overall, including lodging and consumer spending.
Parata Air plans to work with Gangwon Province, the local tourism industry and other relevant organizations to turn flight passengers into local tourism demand and help revitalize Yangyang International Airport.
A Parata Air representative said, “With Yangyang Airport set to regain international service through twice-weekly direct flights to Shanghai, we will leave no detail overlooked in preparing for operations so that the airport can be a nearby departure point for Gangwon residents and the first gateway to Seoraksan and the East Sea coast for Chinese tourists,” adding, “We will join hands with the local community, including Gangwon Province and the tourism industry, to help revitalize the airport and expand tourism demand in Gangwon.”
