[Financial News] Russia, facing severe fuel shortages due to Ukrainian attacks, has recently been found to have bought large quantities of petroleum products, mainly diesel, from South Korea.
On the 6th (local time), the UK daily The Guardian reported, "An analysis of port records and vessel-tracking data found that, in July and August, seven tankers made 14 trips carrying a total of at least 176,000 tonnes of petroleum products loaded at various South Korean ports, including Ulsan and Yeosu, to Russia's Far East, including Vladivostok." According to the report, most of the petroleum products were diesel, the product in shortest supply in the Russian market.
South Korea has recently emerged as an important supplier of petroleum products to Russia, where fuel shortages have become severe.
According to data from shipping intelligence firm Kpler, Russia imported 368,000 tonnes of petroleum products by sea in August alone, more than seven times the amount in the previous month. Of this, 112,000 tonnes came from South Korea, accounting for 31% of the total and making it the second-largest source country after India.
The Guardian noted, "The volume of petroleum products moving from South Korea to Russia began to surge starting in July."
