【Financial News Tokyo correspondent Seo Hye-jin】Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi asked U.S. President Donald Trump to help make a North Korea-Japan summit happen. She was asking him to persuade North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea, to hold a summit with Japan if a North Korea-U.S. summit takes place in the future.
According to NHK on the 6th, Prime Minister Takaichi disclosed this when she met that morning with families of abductees and officials from a cross-party parliamentary league. Families of victims who visited the United States last month, among others, attended the meeting.
Former Finance Minister Kato, who attended the meeting, said that Takaichi had earlier asked President Trump to cooperate in making a North Korea-Japan summit possible on the occasion of a North Korea-U.S. summit. Kato serves as acting chair of a cross-party parliamentary league calling for a resolution to the abduction issue.
Prime Minister Takaichi expressed strong resolve to resolve the abduction issue. “The abduction issue is a grave humanitarian issue,” she said. “Since taking office, I have worked through various channels with the Chief Cabinet Secretary so that the victims can set foot on their homeland even one day sooner.” She added, “I will work with firm resolve to make a breakthrough during my term.”
After the meeting, former Finance Minister Kato told reporters, “Both Prime Minister Takaichi and Chief Cabinet Secretary Kihara said they would do everything in their power to resolve the abduction issue.”
