[Financial News | Gwangyang—Reporter Hwang Tae-jong] YGPA plans to open the Phase 3-2 automated container terminal at the Port of Gwangyang in 2029 and is recruiting a terminal operator from the 6th through November 24.
According to YGPA, the Phase 3-2 automated container terminal at the Port of Gwangyang is part of a port automation project being pursued by the government and YGPA. It will comprise four berths in total—three 4000-TEU-class berths and one 2000-TEU-class berth—with a quay length of 1300 meters.
YGPA President Choi Gwan-ho emphasized at the meeting, "Once the Phase 3-2 automated terminal at the Port of Gwangyang begins full-scale operations, it will help improve port operating efficiency through automation technology and strengthen the port's ability to handle ultra-large container ships, thereby enhancing the Port of Gwangyang's future container logistics competitiveness."
In particular, domestically developed technology will be used in key cargo-handling equipment for the Phase 3-2 automated container terminal at the Port of Gwangyang, including quay cranes (QCs), automated rail-mounted gantry cranes (ARMGCs), and automated guided vehicles (AGVs). Under the current plan, 8 QCs, 32 ARMGCs, and 44 AGVs will be introduced.
In addition, Phase 3-2 at the Port of Gwangyang will serve as a hub for the government's "Physical AI Port Strategy." The project plans to introduce an AI Integrated Operating System (TOS) that automatically optimizes quay allocation plans when vessels berth, as well as the operation of container yards and cargo-handling equipment, thereby improving operating efficiency and safety.

YGPA plans to select a terminal operator with the capacity to ensure the stable operation of an automated container terminal and continuously generate cargo throughput. At the briefing on the 27th, it will explain the project overview, bidding procedures, and how to prepare participation documents.
President Choi Gwan-ho stated, "This recruitment of a terminal operator marks an important starting point as the automated terminal at the Port of Gwangyang transitions from the facility construction phase to the preparation phase for actual operations. We look forward to the active participation of companies with outstanding capabilities, and we will do our utmost to ensure that the automated terminal opens smoothly in 2029 after allowing sufficient preparation time with the selected operator."
