The Island Biennale Organizing Committee said on the 6th that it had successfully operated promotional booths at the 22nd Manse Boryeong Cultural Festival and the 6th Boryeong Youth Week Event, held across Boryeong-si, South Chungcheong Province, on the 3rd and 4th.
The promotional booths were organized to raise awareness of and interest in the Island Biennale, which opens next April, and to encourage residents to take an active role in the event.
At the Manse Boryeong Cultural Festival held at Boryeong Sports Complex on the 3rd, the committee conducted promotional activities for around 7,000 visitors. It also accepted on-site submissions for "Memories of the Island," a public art project involving residents of South Chungcheong Province, drawing a positive response. The project transforms memories, everyday experiences and stories related to Boryeong and the islands of the West Sea into ceramic picture tiles. The tiles will be permanently displayed on the outdoor wall of the Island Culture and Arts Platform, the main exhibition venue of the Island Biennale.
Starting with this resident-participation project, the committee plans to further diversify its collaborative network with local artists and curators from Korea and abroad. It will expand mutually beneficial programs in which island residents participate not merely as visitors but also as exhibition guides and creators. Through these efforts, the committee aims to establish a sustainable international biennale where the local community and art naturally engage with one another.
At the Boryeong Youth Week Event held around the Boryeong Youth Center on the 4th, the committee focused on in-person marketing aimed at younger audiences. In the relaxed atmosphere created by urban camping, picnics and outdoor performances, it presented the Island Biennale's stylish key visual and promotional video, sparking curiosity and an enthusiastic response among young people.
Go Hyo-yeol, secretary-general of the organizing committee, said, "It was meaningful to share the value of the Island Biennale at a major festival where local residents gather." He added, "We will continue preparing for a biennale created together with residents through a variety of on-site promotional activities."
The 2027 First Island Biennale will be held for two months, from April 3 to May 30, 2027, across Wonsando and Godaedo in Boryeong-si, South Chungcheong Province.
