[Financial News] Gyeonggi Province Governor Choo Mi-ae shared her thoughts after watching the film 'Assassin(s)'.
On the fifth, Choo wrote on her social media account, "For the sake of the true national interest and a just history—not the private interests of those in power or the interests of a corrupt cartel—someone must keep asking questions, documenting, and remembering without growing weary. As time passes, people become numb and allow distortions to go unchecked."
She concluded her review by writing, "I watched the film shuddering at the prosecution forces that distort even facts from six years ago."
Seo Young-kyo, chair of the Legislation and Judiciary Committee and a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, also posted on social media that day, "The far right and the People Power Party must pay the price, bear responsibility, and face punishment. Far right and People Power Party, have you even seen the film? You'd be moved if you watched it. The film is really well made. Its artistic quality is outstanding."
Along with her thoughts on 'Assassin(s),' Seo also shared media reports stating that actor Yoo Hae-jin's representatives would respond firmly to defamation and the dissemination of false information about the actor.
Meanwhile, 'Assassin(s)' is based on the shooting of Mrs. Yuk Young-soo during a Liberation Day ceremony on August 15, 1974. In the film, a detective and a reporter question the case after finding discrepancies between what they witnessed or reported and the findings announced by the investigation headquarters.
At the time, the special investigation headquarters concluded that Mun Se-gwang, acting on orders from North Korea and the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan (Chongryon), had tried and failed to shoot former President Park Chung Hee, and that Mrs. Yuk was killed by a bullet in the process. By contrast, the film develops its story by using the reporter and detective investigating the case to suggest the possibility of accomplices and the involvement of powerful state agencies, sparking controversy over historical distortion.
