[Financial News] Ssangyong Engineering & Construction has won the roadbed construction project for Section 9 of the Southern Inland Railway. The company is seen as demonstrating its presence in the civil engineering sector by securing one of Korea's most challenging railway construction projects.
According to Ssangyong Engineering & Construction on the 6th, the company won the construction project for Section 9 of the Southern Inland Railway, ordered by Korea National Railway, on the 29th of last month. The project covers a 24.6-kilometer section connecting Goseong-eup in Goseong County, Gyeongsangnam-do, with Sadeung-myeon in Geoje City. The total project cost is approximately 806.5 billion won. Ssangyong Engineering & Construction will lead the project as the managing contractor with a 45% stake. Construction is scheduled to take 60 months from the start date.
After winning Section 5-2, worth 232.2 billion won, and Section 8-2, worth 211 billion won, earlier this year, Ssangyong Engineering & Construction has also secured Section 9. The company now holds three of the Southern Inland Railway's 14 total sections. The newly awarded Section 9 consists entirely of tunnels. Of that stretch, 2.9 kilometers will use Korea's first undersea shield TBM method for railway construction, making it the project's most challenging section and attracting significant attention from the industry.
The company passed the demanding technical review by leveraging its differentiated construction expertise, including its successful operation of large-diameter TBMs with outer diameters of approximately 11 meters on projects such as Section 5 of the Pyeongtaek–Osong quadruple-tracking project.
A Ssangyong Engineering & Construction official said, "The unrivaled TBM construction expertise we have developed through numerous large-scale railway and tunnel projects was the decisive driving force behind this win. As this is a highly challenging project that will become a key part of the country's core transportation network, we will repay the trust placed in us with flawless construction quality."
Meanwhile, Ssangyong Engineering & Construction has achieved clear improvements in performance across multiple areas since joining Global Sae-A Group at the end of 2022. In addition to steady growth in its overseas and domestic housing businesses, the company has won three sections of the Southern Inland Railway and the construction project for a coal pier at Donghae New Port this year. As a result, its civil engineering business is currently recording performance 30% higher than last year.
