[Financial News] Busan Metropolitan City Government said on the 6th that it had secured a supplementary budget and would carry out an additional private electric vehicle distribution program as demand for electric vehicles rose this year, partly due to the impact of the war in the Middle East.
The decision came after the budget for the second-half distribution program was depleted ahead of schedule.
Busan Metropolitan City Government will invest KRW 3.2 billion in municipal funds and KRW 10.3 billion in national funds secured through the supplementary budget to supply an additional 1,520 vehicles, including 1,300 electric passenger vehicles and 220 electric trucks.
Applications will open for electric trucks on the 7th and for electric passenger vehicles on the 14th.
According to the city government, demand for electric vehicles has surged recently due to fluctuations in international oil prices, relatively low maintenance costs and growing environmental awareness.
The number of electric vehicle applications this year was also found to have more than doubled from last year.
Busan Metropolitan City Government is preparing measures, including adding staff, in anticipation of applications concentrating within a short period following the additional distribution.
Moon Jeong-ju, director of the Climate and Environment Bureau at Busan Metropolitan City Government, said, "The additional distribution program in the second half of the year will be a good opportunity for residents who have been considering switching to electric vehicles."
