[Financial News] President Lee Jae Myung said on the 6th, "A series of personal-information breaches have recently occurred at financial and public institutions," and instructed, "I ask the relevant authorities to promptly and clearly determine the circumstances of the incidents and swiftly and intensively deploy the personnel and resources needed to minimize the damage."
President Lee made the remarks during a State Council of South Korea meeting he chaired at Cheong Wa Dae that day, saying, "Signs have also emerged that AI was used in some hacking incidents, greatly heightening public concern and anxiety."
President Lee expressed concern, saying, "With AI, even people without special skills can now hack easily," and, "As AI technology advances, hacking methods are becoming increasingly sophisticated, while the scope of the damage is spreading across all fronts to an extent that is difficult to compare with the past."
He went on to stress, "The government and businesses, as well as society as a whole, need to take the current situation seriously and exercise particular vigilance. In particular, it is difficult to properly respond to cyber threats that evolve day by day by relying on post-incident remediation alone," adding, "We must build the security capabilities to detect attacks in advance and proactively block them."
President Lee urged, "Relevant ministries should promptly inspect security systems across the private sector as well as the nation's core systems and immediately implement the necessary security measures," adding, "Speed is essential. Technology is advancing so rapidly that it is difficult for our response to keep up. The faster this happens, the more swiftly we must build our capabilities and respond."
He also said, "I hope you will accelerate the development and dissemination of AI technologies specialized in cybersecurity. It is time to completely transform our society's security paradigm to fit the AI era," adding, "Along with building sophisticated security infrastructure, we must also develop a strong security awareness. I ask the private and public sectors to join forces in changing their technology, systems, and awareness for the sake of people's safe daily lives."
