[Financial News] A daughter-in-law's story has sparked a heated online debate after she gave her mother-in-law an S-grade pre-owned luxury handbag for her 60th birthday and became embroiled in a serious conflict with her husband's family.
Daughter-in-law wanted to give her mother-in-law the luxury gift she wanted... Her husband agreed, too
Recently, a post titled "My family fell apart after my mother-in-law found out that the luxury handbag I gave her was pre-owned" was published on an online community.
The author, identified only as A and in her second year of marriage, said she recently decided to give her mother-in-law, who was celebrating her 60th birthday, a luxury-brand handbag she had always wanted. However, after checking the price of a new one at a department store, she decided it would be too much of a burden on her salary. After much consideration, A visited a professional resale shop and bought an S-grade pre-owned bag that came with its certificate of authenticity and all accessories and showed almost no signs of use.
She discussed the purchase with her husband beforehand. At the time, he fully agreed, saying, "That’s really smart. Mother won’t know, and the brand value is the same, so it’s perfect."
Her mother-in-law initially reacted very positively to the gift. A said, "She was so happy to receive the bag and was busy showing it off to her acquaintances."
Mother-in-law discovers later that it was pre-owned and sobs, "You deceived me"
However, the unexpected problem emerged several days later. While organizing the bag's inner pocket, the mother-in-law found a piece of paper believed to have been left behind by the previous owner, revealing that the bag was pre-owned.
Furious, the mother-in-law called A over and vehemently protested, sobbing, "Do you think I'm someone so worthless that I should receive a used item?" and "My daughter-in-law deceived and tricked me, then gave me an old bag."
What left A even more bewildered was her husband's sudden change in attitude. Although he had agreed beforehand, after witnessing his mother's anger, he shifted all the blame to A, saying, "Why didn't you just buy a new bag from a mid- to low-priced brand? Why did you go so far as to lie and give her a used one?"
A expressed her frustration, saying, "The brand in question was the one Mother wanted, and I did my best within my financial means to choose a bag in perfect condition." She added, "My husband's family is making a huge fuss, saying I looked down on Mother, while my husband is blaming everything on my lie. I don't know whether I committed some unforgivable sin."
Amid divided opinions, online commenters say, "The husband is the most cowardly of all"
Opinions among those who read the story were sharply divided. Many criticized the husband's irresponsible behavior, saying, "He agreed to it with his wife, but blamed her as soon as his mother got angry. He's the most cowardly one," and "I feel sorry for the daughter-in-law, who did her best within her means." Others countered just as strongly, arguing, "Hiding the fact that it was pre-owned and presenting it as new was itself deceptive," and "For a 60th-birthday gift, it would have been better to give a new bag from a mid- to low-priced brand that fit their means, or simply give cash."
