[Financial News] LG Electronics announced on the 6th that it would supply a next-generation integrated cockpit solution to Renault Group’s New Trafic Van E-Tech electric, Europe’s first commercial software-defined vehicle (SDV).
Drawing on capabilities built through its TV, home appliance, and mobile businesses, LG Electronics has been recognized as a key partner in both automotive instrument clusters and infotainment. The company is expanding its reach with systems optimized for the characteristics of SDVs, which have emerged as the prevailing trend in the future mobility industry.
The SDV-tailored integrated cockpit solution supplied by LG Electronics differs from conventional systems, in which dozens of electronic control units (ECUs) operate separately according to functions such as the cockpit, driver assistance, and powertrain. Instead, it integrates vehicle control through a high-performance computer and a centralized software architecture.
Another advantage is that the system can be continuously upgraded through over-the-air software updates, including AI-based advanced features.
Designed around these SDV characteristics, the solution centrally controls an instrument-cluster system that provides driving information such as speed, RPM (engine revolutions per minute), and warning lights, as well as an infotainment system supporting navigation and media playback.
LG Electronics attributed its ability to introduce this advanced SDV-tailored solution to its technological expertise accumulated over many years and its strong partnerships. The company has built a long-standing relationship of trust with Renault Group, having been selected as an outstanding supplier in 2014, 2017, and 2020 before jointly developing an Android-based automotive infotainment system in 2021.
In addition to Renault Group, LG Electronics plans to expand cooperation with major automakers in North America, Asia, and other regions and establish itself as a trusted supplier in the rapidly growing SDV automotive electronics market.
Eun Seok-hyun, president and head of LG Electronics’ VS Business Division, emphasized, "Through close cooperation with global automakers, including Renault Group, we will continue to develop the core technologies and solutions needed for the mobility industry’s transition to SDVs."
