[Financial News] A Busan-based youth enterprise has partnered with renowned Italian fashion company Dolce & Gabbana to commercialize South Korea’s first Digital Product Passport.
Busan City announced on the 6th that DATASPIRA had launched South Korea’s first Digital Product Passport (DPP) commercialization service and signed a supply agreement with Dolce & Gabbana.
DATASPIRA is a local company that grew with support, including technology transfers, from the KAIST Auto-ID Labs Busan Innovation Institute, an international joint research institute established by Busan City and the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). The KAIST Auto-ID Labs Busan Innovation Institute is an international joint research institute of GS1, an international organization focused on digital transformation standards. It conducts joint research on digital transformation standardization and the development of high-value-added applications with research institutes at leading universities overseas, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), ETH Zurich and the University of Cambridge, as well as global logistics companies.

A Digital Product Passport is a system for managing lifecycle information, including resource recycling, for products imported into and distributed within the European Union (EU). The EU has been phasing in mandatory application by product category since this year.
Since last year, DATASPIRA has participated with Dolce & Gabbana in a competitive proof-of-concept (PoC) process involving companies from around the world. It signed the final supply agreement on April 9 and began full-scale commercialization of its Digital Product Passport service.
Busan City explained that the commercialization was significant because a local company had applied technology capable of responding to EU product-related regulations in the actual market.
The technology is also expected to help local companies enter the European market in the future, as interest in advancing into Europe grows following the successful completion of a trial voyage along the Arctic route from the Port of Busan to the Port of Rotterdam on September 12.
After launching a product certified by the Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability (GDST) in July, DATASPIRA has continued applying its technologies and products to the actual market, including this Digital Product Passport commercialization service. The company is rolling out technologies and products capable of responding to international regulations.
Mayor Chun Jae-soo said, "The commercialization of this technology and the signing of an international contract are the results of the outstanding artificial intelligence capabilities and pioneering spirit of a local youth enterprise. We will continue to actively support the integration of artificial intelligence technology with local industries and ambitious technology startups using artificial intelligence, in collaboration with local universities and other institutions."
