[Financial News] Genesis has selected the large luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) Genesis GV80 as the brand's first hybrid model. Combining a 2.5-liter turbo engine with an electric motor raises maximum output by 16% over the existing gasoline model while improving fuel economy by 29%. Priced at KRW 76.8 million, the vehicle will compete with imported luxury SUVs by emphasizing performance and efficiency.
Genesis launched the Genesis GV80 Hybrid, equipped with a 2.5 Turbo Hybrid system, on the 6th and began sales.
The Genesis GV80 Hybrid is Genesis's first hybrid model. It combines a 2.5 Turbo engine with a motor responsible for starting the engine and generating electricity, as well as a 59.1-kW motor that handles propulsion and regenerative braking in a parallel configuration.
Combined system output is 352 horsepower, about 16% higher than the 304 horsepower produced by the existing Genesis GV80 2.5 Turbo. Combined fuel economy is 12 km/L for the 19-inch, two-wheel-drive, five-seat configuration, an improvement of about 29% over the gasoline model. With a 76-liter fuel tank, the vehicle can travel up to approximately 912 km on a single tank.
Genesis also applied a new seven-speed transmission for the first time. Its structure was optimized based on the rear-wheel-drive eight-speed transmission used in the existing 3.5 Turbo model. The Hyundai Motor Group's first hybrid system to use a liquid-cooled battery increases maximum discharge output and expands the range in which the electric motor can be used.
The vehicle was designed to make active use of EV mode from immediately after launch to approximately 30 km/h, reducing engine noise and vibration in underground parking garages and urban traffic jams. During reacceleration in EV mode, engine output is quickly engaged, making reacceleration at 100 km/h about 18% faster than that of the existing 2.5 gasoline turbo, based on in-house measurements.
The all-wheel-drive model features Hyundai Motor Group's first Hybrid Terrain Performance system. If motor-only propulsion is insufficient on slopes or unpaved roads, the engine also engages to improve the vehicle's ability to get out. Predictive control, which anticipates the route and road conditions to adjust the battery's charge level, along with smart regenerative braking, V2L and Stay Mode, has also been applied.
Ride comfort and quietness have also been enhanced. Dual-valve electronically controlled shock absorbers adjust damping force according to the vehicle's movements, while additional technology reduces engine and transmission vibration.
The Genesis GV80 Hybrid is priced at KRW 76.8 million, based on a 5% individual consumption tax. Genesis also launched the 2027 Genesis GV80 and 2027 Genesis GV80 Coupe, which are annual model updates. They are priced at KRW 69.85 million and KRW 82.7 million, respectively.
Lee Si-hyuk, Executive Vice President and Head of Genesis Business Division, said, "We have achieved EV-level quietness while securing powerful powertrain performance and excellent efficiency," adding, "We will respond to market changes and customer demands by offering a variety of powertrain experiences."
