[Financial News] Independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon launched a strong counterattack against Choo Mi-ae, governor of Gyeonggi Province, after she targeted him over the selection of the inaugural head of the Serious Crime Investigation Agency. Han brought up Choo's past support for the impeachment of former President Roh Moo-hyun.
On the 5th, Han posted on Facebook an old photo of Governor Choo reading a newspaper headline about the passage of Roh Moo-hyun's impeachment motion in 2004. He wrote, "This is a question for you, Choo Mi-ae," and asked, "Why did you hate former President Roh Moo-hyun as though you wanted him dead?"
The dispute began when Governor Choo opposed the appointment of Kim Ji-yong as the inaugural head of the Serious Crime Investigation Agency and questioned why Han's mobile phone had not undergone forensic examination during the past Channel A case.
Choo argued that Kim, who was then chief of the Supreme Prosecutors' Office Criminal Affairs Division, could not easily avoid responsibility for the disruption of the forensic examination.
Han sarcastically called Choo "the mother of conservatives" and criticized her, saying, "She wrote a long post about Kim's appointment, but even after reading it twice, I couldn't understand what it was saying. It seems to say that she is right and Lee Jae-myung is wrong, but more than half of it is just insults directed at Han Dong-hoon."
He also mocked Kim, saying, "Go to Governor Choo and pledge allegiance to her," in a sarcastic reference to allegations of external pressure on the investigation.
Political circles have interpreted Han's remarks as an attack on a political rival aimed at Governor Choo's political identity.
In 2004, Choo, then a member of the MDP, voted in favor of introducing and passing the impeachment motion against then-President Roh. After facing fierce backlash, she staged a "three steps and one bow" protest in Gwangju ahead of the general election as a gesture of apology.
