[Financial News] Government-funded research institutes, industry, academia, public organizations and developer communities will come together to explore open-source technologies and directions for R&D innovation in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).
ETRI announced on the 6th that the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National Research Council of Science & Technology (NST) will host OST 2026 Open Source Tech Day, an open-source event for government-funded research institutes, on the 7th at the aT Center in Yangjae-dong, Seoul.
Held under the theme "Open-Source Innovation: Creating the Future with AI," the event will share the R&D innovations and changes in the technology ecosystem brought about by the convergence of AI and open source. It is also intended to expand cooperation among government-funded research institutes, industry, academia, public organizations and developer communities.
Open Source Tech Day, first held by ETRI in 2020, is marking its seventh edition this year. In addition to ETRI, eight other government-funded research institutes will participate: Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER), Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology (KRICT), Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials (KIMM) and Korea Food Research Institute.
The event's most distinctive feature is its focus on how the role of open source is expanding beyond the simple release and sharing of software. As AI technology advances rapidly, open source is being highlighted as a core foundation that shapes AI innovation, industrial competitiveness and technological sovereignty.
The keynote will be delivered by Mazin Gilbert, a director at the Agentic AI Foundation, which is working to establish open standards and an ecosystem for Agentic AI. Under the title "From Artificial Intelligence (AI) to Agentic AI: The Role of Open Standards," he will discuss the transition from AI to Agentic AI and the significance of open standards in that process. Hwayoung Lee, an executive at LG AI Research, will then address "Hidden Legal Risks in AI Training Data," examining copyright and legal issues that may arise when AI training data is used, as well as considerations for companies and research institutions. In the afternoon, 18 specialized presentations will be held across three tracks.
Anyone who has completed preregistration may attend the event free of charge. Details of the program and speaker information are available on the official OST 2026 website.
