[Financial News] North Korea is reportedly installing fences in areas south of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) on the Eastern Front, in addition to laying mines on the Western Front. The installation of fences south of the MDL by North Korean troops on the Eastern Front is believed to have taken place in August and September this year. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether North Korean troops laid mines on the Eastern Front.
On the 5th, Yoo Yong-won, a People Power Party member of the National Assembly's National Defense Committee, said at a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Hall, "Structures, including a fence line erected by North Korean troops in the 21st Infantry Division area on the Eastern Front, appear to have been installed south of the MDL." Yoo said the MDL crossing was carried out as part of North Korea's fortification of its border and that the South Korean military is aware of it.
The crossing took place as recently as August and September this year, under the Lee Jae-myung administration. He said, "The Eastern area consists of rugged mountains, so the incident appears to have been identified late. The 21st Infantry Division area is where Kim Yo Jong mentioned increasing firepower in her previous statement. Further provocations by North Korea are expected. A more principled and resolute response is needed."
However, Yoo said that when the National Defense Committee questioned the South Korean military on September 29 about North Korean troops' intrusion across the MDL in the 21st Infantry Division area, the military responded that it was merely a crossing, not a minefield.
Yoo said, "We cannot help but question whether the government and military authorities are downplaying and distorting North Korea's provocations following the DMZ mine provocation incident."
He also demanded that the government disclose all areas where North Korean troops intruded south of the MDL, including minefields and structures such as fences, along with the dates they were installed. He called for the government to clearly disclose all facts and response plans regarding North Korea's attempts to undermine the MDL.
Yoo additionally pointed out, "The United Nations Command also announced that the discovery of North Korean mines south of the MDL was an obvious violation of the Korean Armistice Agreement, but North Korea is engaging in reckless rhetoric and shameless counteraccusatory propaganda." He urged, "North Korea must remove the fence line and immediately stop violating the Military Demarcation Line."
