[Financial News] Subscribers preparing to study in Japan, take part in a working holiday, or relocate there for work will be able to apply for a Japanese phone number in Korea before departure.
KT Japan announced on the 5th that it will launch tt mobile, a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) service that allows domestic customers planning extended stays in Japan to apply for a Japanese phone number using only their passports.
A Japanese phone number is required to open a bank account, complete identity verification, and register a local contact number, but it has been difficult to secure one before arriving in Japan. Japanese-language application procedures and document preparation have also placed a burden on long-term visitors during the initial settlement process.
With tt mobile, customers can complete the application process in Korea before departure using their passport and PASS easy authentication. After receiving the SIM card, customers can apply to activate the service after arriving in Japan and use a Japanese phone number through the NTT DoCoMo network. Fees can be paid with a card issued in Korea under the subscriber's name.
Two plans are available for passport-based registration: the Working Holiday and Student Plan and the Business Plan.
The Working Holiday and Student Plan targets working holiday participants aged 30 or younger and international students. It comes in four data options: 5GB, 10GB, 30GB, and 50GB. Monthly fees range from 1,210 to 3,300 yen, while voice calls and text messages are charged separately based on usage.
The Business Plan targets employees assigned to Japan, business travelers, and local business operators, and offers three data options: 10GB, 30GB, and 50GB. Unlimited domestic calls in Japan are included by default, and monthly fees range from 2,970 to 4,400 yen. Under both plans, customers can continue using data at speeds of up to 200 Kbps after exhausting their included data.
To mark the service launch, KT Japan will waive the 5,500-yen international SIM shipping fee for customers who complete their applications by December 31.
Chanbeom Park, head of KT Japan, said, "We will continue expanding a range of telecommunications services for Koreans visiting or staying in Japan for extended periods."
