[Financial News]  "Even after cutting my hair, I was still 100 grams over. On the morning I returned home, the head coach told me, 'Let's quietly put this behind us.'"
A shocking disclosure has revealed that the absurd weigh-in disqualification at the 2026 Aichi–Nagoya Asian Games was caused by a fatal communication error and careless response from the national team's coaching staff. The athlete, who lost the chance to compete at her first Asian Games in vain, had to vomit what she had eaten and even cut her hair in a desperate attempt to make weight. Allegations that the coaching staff tried to downplay and conceal the incident have further fueled the controversy.
Jeong Su-jin of Yong In University, a national team member in the women's 48-kilogram judo division, revealed through social media on the 4th what happened during the random-weigh-in disqualification on the 30th of last month.
According to Jeong Su-jin, she had safely passed the official weigh-in the previous day and had carefully kept her weight at 50.4 kg by the morning of the competition—the 5% allowance for her weight class. The problem arose immediately after the result of the random-weigh-in draw was announced that morning. Jeong Su-jin said, "After the head coach and coach checked the draw results, they told me, \"Only one male athlete from the same team was selected, and you are not subject to the random weigh-in.\" I checked again, but they said I was not subject to it. They told me that because I had lost a lot of weight, I should eat slowly and recover, so I ate."
To recover quickly, she consumed 300 grams of porridge, 200 grams of bananas and 600 grams of an electrolyte drink before warming up. But disaster struck with just 15 minutes remaining before the weigh-in ended. She was belatedly informed that she had been selected for the random weigh-in.
Jeong Su-jin described the desperate situation, saying, "From that point on, I vomited everything I had eaten and even cut my hair. I kept running and did everything I could to make weight until the last moment, but I was still 100 grams over." In the end, she was disqualified without ever stepping onto the mat for the round of 16.

The coaching staff's response afterward posed an even greater problem. Jeong Su-jin revealed, "After the incident, the coaches were busy coaching the other athletes, leaving only the assurance that they would take responsibility once we returned to Korea, while I was subjected to countless accusations. This morning, as we were returning to Korea, the head coach told me, \"We have to wrap this up as it is so it can end quietly.\"" The revelation showed that the athlete who had been criticized for allegedly failing to manage her weight was in fact a victim of the coaching staff's absurd mistake and irresponsibility.
As the incident spiraled out of control, the Korea Judo Association issued a formal statement on the 5th and apologized. The association said, "We extend our condolences over the emotional distress Jeong Su-jin must have suffered and sincerely apologize for causing great concern to the judo community and the public."
Taking into account that the national team has already left the country to compete in the World Championships, the association promised to launch a thorough investigation into Jeong Su-jin and the coaches involved as soon as the team returns on the 13th. Head coach Jeong Seong-suk is also said to recognize her own fault and to have stated that she will accept disciplinary action.
