[Financial News] In the first round of Brazil's presidential election held on the 4th (local time), Senator Flávio Bolsonaro and President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva are poised to advance to the runoff.
According to the Federal Electoral Court, with more than 89.58% of the votes counted, Senator Flávio Bolsonaro of the Liberal Party was leading with 48.10%, ahead of President Lula of the Workers' Party (PT), who had received 43.91%.
As predicted by Datafolha and other polling organizations, no candidate won a majority—more than 50% of the vote. The two candidates will therefore face off in a runoff on the 25th of this month to determine the final winner.
Under Brazil's electoral law, if no candidate wins a majority in the first round, the candidates who finish first and second must compete in a runoff. The country's next president will therefore be determined in the runoff three weeks from now, on the 25th.
