[Financial News] Megabox has apologized for the controversy surrounding the Original Ticket for the film 'The Assassin(s)' and will dispose of all remaining copies.
In a statement on the 4th, Megabox said, "We deeply failed to appreciate the seriousness and weight of the historical tragedy and horrific event" and added, "We sincerely apologize to those who felt uncomfortable and to those who experienced pain at the time of the incident."
The controversial Original Ticket was merchandise given free of charge to filmgoers on a first-come, first-served basis. Most of the tickets were reportedly sold out on the film's opening day.
The ticket was made by placing a transparent film marked with bullet holes over an image resembling the venue of the 1974 Yuk Young-soo shooting. When the transparent film was overlaid, the bullet marks appeared to hit the stage, audience seating and the Republic of Korea.
Critics said it was inappropriate to use an actual historical tragedy as merchandise to promote a film.
Megabox explained that, because the film's release schedule was tight, staff produced the merchandise based on some images provided by the distributor and production company without having reviewed the work in advance.
Megabox will not distribute the remaining Original Tickets and plans to dispose of all of them. It also said it would establish an internal procedure to review potential social and ethical issues in advance when producing Original Tickets featuring historical events or figures.
