[Financial News] Athletes affiliated with the Seoul Metropolitan Government won a total of 12 medals, including three golds, at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. This is the most medals ever won by Seoul Metropolitan Government athletes at the Asian Games.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government said on the 5th that 17 athletes affiliated with the Seoul Metropolitan Government competed as members of the national team in seven sports, including fencing, handball and climbing, at the Asian Games held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from the 19th of last month through the 4th. They won three gold, three silver and six bronze medals.
The result was two medals better than the 10 won at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games—two gold, six silver and two bronze. At the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, the team won nine medals: five gold, two silver and two bronze.
In fencing, Jeon Ha-young won gold in the team sabre event. Park Ji-hee, competing in her first international competition, won silver in both the individual and team foil events. Sim So-eun also added a silver medal in the team foil event.
In handball, Bitna Woo, EUNBIN JO and Jeong Jin-hui helped the team win all six matches from the preliminary rounds through the final, earning gold medals. With this victory, South Korea's women's handball team returned to the top of the Asian Games podium for the first time in eight years.
Seo Chae-hyun won gold in lead and bronze in bouldering, earning two medals in climbing. Lee Dohyun added a bronze in lead after winning silver in bouldering, while Jeong Jimin won bronze in speed. Seoul Metropolitan Government athletes also won bronze medals in team pursuit cycling and women's football.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government invests roughly 20 billion won annually in its corporate sports teams. Currently, 189 athletes compete on 25 teams across 23 sports. Medalists from these Asian Games will receive prize money of 15 million won for gold, 10 million won for silver and 7 million won for bronze.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government also plans to build a training facility at Jamsil Sports Complex in 2027. The facility will include dedicated training centers for seven sports, including fencing and taekwondo, along with 40 dormitory rooms and a cafeteria.
Oh Se-hoon, the Mayor of Seoul, will hold a luncheon meeting with the athletes on the 8th to encourage those who competed in the Games. After the Asian Games, Seoul's athletes will also compete in the 107th National Sports Festival, which will be held in Jeju Province from the 16th to the 22nd. Seoul will send a delegation of roughly 2,200 athletes across 50 sports.
The mayor said, "The sweat and hard work of Seoul Metropolitan Government athletes, who gave their all to the end on the Asian stage while representing the Republic of Korea, have borne good fruit and once again demonstrated Seoul's strength. We will continue to invest in and support elite sports so that athletes can train in a stable environment and take on bigger stages."
