[Financial News] "Even neighborhood sports days aren't done like this."
The 2026 Asian Games came to a bitter close, bearing the stigma of being the "worst tournament in history" as it exposed the worst operational mismanagement right up to the very last moment. In particular, the Republic of Korea men's football final awards ceremony, which marked the finale of the competition, was reduced to a laughingstock on the international sports stage as an absurd "flag-raising accident" occurred that crushed the joy of the gold medal.
The men's soccer awards ceremony was held on the 3rd at Toyota Stadium in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. The Taegeuk Warriors, who had defeated Japan 1-0 to achieve the monumental feat of winning their fourth consecutive Asian Games title, stood on the highest podium. However, the moment the glorious national anthem rang out, the Taegeuk flag—which was supposed to soar to the highest point—stopped halfway, appearing tangled. Local officials in charge of the hoisting were thrown into confusion, and the players pointed toward the flagpole with bewildered expressions. Ultimately, the flag failed to reach the top before the national anthem ended, resulting in an unprecedented farce that drew boos from the crowd.

Football national team captain Lee Gi-hyuk (Gangwon State) could not hide his bitterness, saying, "The awards ceremony is a place to be celebrated, but it is very regrettable that we could not even properly unfurl the Taegeukgi for the players who worked hard."
The flag-raising accident on this day was just the tip of the iceberg. The 2026 Asian Games was a continuous series of 'operational disasters' for 16 days, from before the opening ceremony to the closing ceremony.
The shuttle buses, which were supposed to serve as the players' transportation, frequently headed to the wrong destinations. The Republic of Korea men's volleyball team wasted their entire training session after their buses were swapped with those of the Pakistani team, and the basketball and soccer teams also suffered serious disruptions to their training schedules due to bus dispatch delays.
The national anthem playing incident marked the height of international disrespect. A fatal incident occurred during a Republic of Korea hockey team match where the North Korean national anthem was played instead of the South Korean one.

The gates of hell opened from the very first day of arrival. Due to system registration errors and the collapse of the transportation network, athletes from various countries, including the Korean delegation, had to sleep rough at the airport for at least 3 hours and up to over 14 hours. Unable to bear it any longer, the Republic of Korea rowing team created a ridiculous scene by taking taxis at their own expense, while Chinese national gymnast Zhang Boheng vented his frustration on social media, saying, "I haven't eaten anything for 12 hours."
The accommodation issues were also a spectacle. The bizarre allocation method of using cruise ships and prefabricated container accommodations eventually led to major incidents. Indian athletes faced the absurd situation of being assigned three people to a two-person room, and even the host nation Japan suffered a 'mixed-gender room disaster' where male and female athletes were assigned to the same room, resulting in a farce of hastily reassigning rooms.
The Japanese organizing committee's complacent management of the tournament, which abandoned even the basics for the sake of cost-cutting, left Asia's largest sports festival as the "worst memory" for the participating athletes and exposed the true face of Japanese sports administration to the world.
