Serving Police Officer Detained for Creating and Distributing Fabricated Videos of Acquaintances Using AI

[Financial News] A serving police officer has been detained for creating fabricated sexual exploitation material using the faces of acquaintances and other individuals with artificial intelligence (AI), and distributing some of it through Telegram.
According to police on the 4th, Officer A of Seoul Dongdaemun Police Station was detained last month on charges of possessing sexual exploitation material and fabricated videos, as well as producing and distributing fabricated videos.
Busan Metropolitan Police Agency reportedly identified Officer A after tracking him for several months following an undercover investigation launched in December last year targeting Telegram chat rooms where fabricated videos were being circulated.
During an analysis of Officer A's mobile phone and other devices, investigators reportedly found more than 5,600 illegal videos, including about 2,600 fabricated videos, about 1,600 items of child and youth sexual exploitation material, and about 1,300 illegally filmed videos.
The investigation found that Officer A created about 400 fabricated videos depicting acquaintances naked using AI applications and other tools from March 2022 through last July. He also faces allegations of directly producing videos by illegally filming women's bodies. Investigators further determined that some of the fabricated videos he made from last August through last April were distributed through Telegram chat rooms and other channels.
Officer A joined the police force in April 2024. He reportedly had previously been investigated in a similar case before joining the police and received deferred prosecution.
Seoul Dongdaemun Police Station placed Officer A on standby duty after being notified by Busan Metropolitan Police Agency that the investigation had begun. After Officer A was detained last month, the station reportedly relieved him of his post.
Police plan to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Officer A based on the outcome of his trial and other factors.
