[Financial News] Internet broadcaster Gwa-jeup Se-yeon, whose real name is In Se-yeon and who is 25, is under police investigation on suspicion of using psychotropic drugs. She has sparked controversy after launching a joint donation broadcast, known as an "Excel stream," and collecting more than 100 million won in donations in a single day.
According to the internet broadcasting industry on the 4th, Gwa-jeup Se-yeon held the first episode of "Rookie Academy," a new series she created, through YouTube Live on the 1st. During the broadcast, she introduced herself as the main host and representative of the program, signaling her full return to activities.
More than 20,000 viewers tuned in simultaneously that day. Pung Today, a website that tracks internet broadcast earnings, estimated that approximately 120 million won in donations was collected across the broadcast overnight.
An Excel stream is a type of content in which multiple performers showcase dances or reactions, encouraging viewers to compete in real-time donations. Performers are assigned different positions and rankings based on the amounts donated. The 120 million won counted in this case represents the total donations for the entire broadcast and differs from Gwa-jeup Se-yeon's personal net earnings. Nevertheless, criticism has emerged because she continued large-scale commercial activities while being investigated as a suspect.
Seoul Gangnam Police Station is investigating three people, including Gwa-jeup Se-yeon and her romantic partner, AfreecaTV streamer K, whose real name is Park Jung-gyu, after booking them without detention on suspicion of violating the Narcotics Control Act. According to police, K allegedly had an acquaintance obtain prescriptions on his behalf for psychotropic drugs, including sleeping medication, and took them with Gwa-jeup Se-yeon in June. Related circumstances were discovered while Gwa-jeup Se-yeon was being treated after being taken to an emergency room.
Gwa-jeup Se-yeon's side has strongly denied allegations of illegal drug use or obtaining prescriptions through another person. Her legal representative explained, "She went to the emergency room after taking sleeping medication containing zolpidem that her romantic partner possessed during an argument with him. She regrets the risks of taking someone else's medication, but she did not participate in obtaining prescriptions through another person or use illegal drugs." Regarding allegations that she bleached her hair to interfere with testing, the representative also claimed that she had fully cooperated with the investigation by voluntarily submitting 100 strands of hair while her hair was still black.
Opinions among internet users have been divided over the large-scale donation broadcast, which took place before the investigation results were released. Some criticized her, saying, "She should have exercised restraint even before a judicial determination," and, "Despite causing a social controversy, she is focusing only on provocative money-making." Others countered, "Under the principle of presumption of innocence, her livelihood activities cannot be criticized."
