【Financial News, Ulsan—Reporter Choi Soo-sang】 Ulsan District Court sentenced A, a man in his 20s, to six months in prison, suspended for two years, and ordered him to complete 120 hours of community service for extortion and assault causing injury.
According to the Ulsan District Court’s Criminal Division 1 single-judge panel on the 4th, A was indicted for blocking his girlfriend, B, as she tried to take a taxi home from a busy area in Nam-gu, Ulsan, in February this year. While swearing at her, he threatened her, saying, "I will let you go home if you pay for the alcohol we drank today plus another 100,000 won." Although the frightened B transferred 200,000 won to A, he pushed her several times, causing her to fall onto the street and suffer injuries.
A had paid for the meat, alcohol and other items he consumed with B, but after the two argued, he acted in this manner.
The court said it had taken into account the small amount of money involved and the minor nature of the injuries. However, it explained the sentence by stating, "Although the defendant’s offense was not minor, he was not serious during the investigation and appeared not to recognize his wrongdoing even in court." It added, "The victim has also not been compensated."
