Iran appears to have attacked a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on the 3rd (local time). IRIB News, Iran’s state broadcaster, reported that a tanker exploded in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Al Jazeera, IRIB said that day, citing sources, that the tanker had violated regulations by turning off its vessel-tracking system before entering the strait.
News of the tanker explosion in the Strait of Hormuz emerged amid clashes between Saudi Arabia and Houthi rebels over control of the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.
Saudi Arabia, which had reportedly been planning a major attack on the Houthi rebels in Yemen, launched a large-scale assault on them that day. Using Yemeni government forces, it attacked Sanaa, the capital controlled by the Houthi rebels, reportedly killing at least 72 people.
The Houthi rebels also retaliated against Saudi Arabia, and reports said loud blasts were heard at Saudi Aramco oil-refining facilities.
