[Financial News] Police and firefighters responding to a report that a woman was being assaulted at a neighboring home forcibly opened the front door, only to confirm that the report was false. Police subsequently referred the caller to prosecutors without detention.
On the 2nd, Gwangju Seobu Police Station announced that it had referred a man in his 40s, identified as A, to prosecutors on suspicion of obstructing official duties through deceptive means by falsely reporting that an assault was taking place at a neighbor's home.
A is accused of making a false report to 112 at around 10:29 a.m. on August 26, claiming that a man next door was beating a woman at a multifamily residence in Seo-gu, Gwangju. He urgently reported, "The man next door is beating a woman," and then made a series of additional reports saying, "He keeps hitting her" and "It's pitiful."
Officers from Hwa Jeong Police Substation dispatched to the scene knocked on the door of the reported residence and tried to determine what was happening inside, but received no response. After warning that they would force the door open in case of an emergency, they still received no response. Police then forcibly opened the front door with firefighters and entered with a Taser and handgun at the ready.
However, after a disturbance lasting about 20 minutes, officers found no one inside the house. When they also lost contact with the original caller after forcing the door open, they began searching for him based on the reporting records. A reportedly displayed suspicious behavior: He strongly denied making the report, but when a call came to the number used to make it, he rambled and tried to leave the scene.
Police arrested A after confirming indications of a false report based on the original report identifying the neighboring home, the man's statement and the fact that no one was present at the scene. Investigators found that A had no criminal record or other notable issues and had made the false report despite having no grudge against the neighbor.
