[Financial News] Cheong Wa Dae held an emergency meeting immediately after North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the East Sea from the Wonsan area on the 3rd, reviewing its response posture and the security situation. It described North Korea's repeated ballistic missile launches as "a grave act that violates United Nations Security Council resolutions and does not help manage the current situation" and urged an immediate halt.
The Office of National Security (ONS) held an "Emergency Security Situation Review Meeting" with relevant agencies, including the Ministry of National Defense and the Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff (ROK JCS), after North Korea launched a ballistic missile toward the East Sea from the Wonsan area that day.
The meeting reviewed the South Korean military's response and analyzed and assessed the missile launch's potential impact on security on the Korean Peninsula. The ONS also instructed the relevant agencies to carry out all necessary follow-up measures without disruption.
As North Korea's ballistic missile launch followed the recent landmine explosion in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the government emphasized the need to thoroughly recheck the South Korean military's readiness posture and ensure there were no gaps in its preparedness.
The ONS said, "North Korea's repeated ballistic missile launches are not only violations of United Nations Security Council resolutions but also grave acts that do absolutely nothing to help manage the current situation. We urge North Korea to stop them immediately."
Earlier that day, the ROK JCS announced that it had detected a ballistic missile launched toward the East Sea from the Wonsan area at around 6:30 a.m. The launch came three days after the South Korean government demanded an apology and responsible measures from North Korea over an incident in which three South Korean service members were seriously injured by a landmine explosion in the area south of the DMZ's Military Demarcation Line (MDL). It was North Korea's 15th ballistic missile launch of the year and the first in 13 days since the 20th of last month.
North Korea also once again denied responsibility for the DMZ explosion in a statement by Kim Yo Jong, head of the General Affairs Department of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), and criticized President Lee Jae Myung's position on easing military tensions between the two Koreas as "the climax of a farce."
A Cheong Wa Dae official said, "Slanderous remarks about our government and president do not help build mutual trust. We urge the North to stop its wasteful criticism and join our efforts to achieve peaceful coexistence on the Korean Peninsula."
