[Financial News] The State Department said on the 2nd (local time) that South Korea's investment projects in the United States, including the Alaska LNG project, would benefit both countries if they become reality.
Tommy Pigott, a State Department spokesperson, met with reporters at the Foreign Press Center (FPC) in Washington, D.C., and described South Korea's recently announced investment projects in the United States as "a positive development for both countries." He added, "We hope these investments come to fruition."
Pigott said, "Across the administration, we have clearly discussed with South Korea investments related to energy security and supply chains, as well as investments stemming from a historic trade agreement," and positively assessed the continued investment announcements based on the agreement between the two countries.
He emphasized, "If these investments are realized, they will be a genuine win-win for the United States, South Korea and the people of both countries."
Asked about discrepancies between the U.S. and South Korean governments' announcements regarding the Alaska LNG project and other initiatives, he explained, "What I want to emphasize is the positive aspect of this issue," adding, "The fact that we reached an investment agreement itself is important."
Earlier, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the South Korean government would invest $200 billion (approximately 273 trillion won) in U.S. energy infrastructure, including the $50 billion Alaska LNG project. The South Korean government, however, maintains that the project is still under review and that it has not confirmed its participation.
