【Financial News, Jeju—Reporter Jeong Yong-bok】 A historical and cultural festival will be held at Hangpadu-ri in Jeju, where Sambyeolcho made its stand against the Goryeo-Mongolia allied forces, to revisit the history of the resistance against the Mongols and reflect on the meaning of peace.
According to the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province World Heritage Headquarters on the 3rd, the 2026 Hangpadoori Historical and Cultural Festival will be held on the 5th in the area surrounding the Historic Site of Anti-Mongolian Struggle in Hangpadu-ri, Jeju. The festival began in 2018 and is being held for the eighth time this year. It was not held in 2020 because of COVID-19.
This year's theme is "A Wish for Peace Blossoming from the History of the Anti-Mongolian Struggle."
Hangpadu-ri is a place where the history of Sambyeolcho's resistance remains after it moved to Jeju to confront the Goryeo-Mongolia allied forces. The event has been designed to let visitors encounter that period while walking through the actual historical sites associated with the resistance against the Mongols.
The main program is a walk along Hangpadu-ri's earthen ramparts. The event will open with a traditional folk performance by the Aewol-eup Folk Preservation Association, followed by a celebratory performance by the Daon Dance Company. After the opening ceremony, participants will walk along the ramparts together and watch traditional cultural performances.
A guided tour of the earthen ramparts will also be available. Participants can examine the structure of the ramparts and the historical significance of the Historic Site of Anti-Mongolian Struggle in Hangpadu-ri, Jeju, on site.
A traditional cultural performance takes place at last year's Hangpadoori Historical and Cultural Festival. This year's festival, held under the theme "A Wish for Peace Blossoming from the History of the Anti-Mongolian Struggle," will feature an earthen-rampart walk and performances, along with hands-on programs including horseback riding and archery. Hands-on programs that allow visitors to experience history directly will also be offered. They include a historical market themed around the resistance against the Mongols, traditional costume experiences, a general-themed photo event, horseback riding, archery and Sambyeolcho flag-making.
This year's event places greater emphasis on using Hangpadu-ri as a historical site than on being a performance-centered local festival. Visitors will walk the ramparts, listen to explanations and then take part in hands-on activities based on Sambyeolcho and Jeju's traditional culture.
The Jeju Special Self-Governing Province World Heritage Headquarters plans to use the event to raise awareness among residents and tourists of the historical value of the Historic Site of Anti-Mongolian Struggle in Hangpadu-ri, Jeju, and expand opportunities to experience cultural heritage on site.
Kim Hyeong-eun, head of the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province World Heritage Headquarters, said, "I hope this will be an opportunity to share with more people the value of the cultural heritage embodied in the Historic Site of Anti-Mongolian Struggle in Hangpadu-ri, Jeju," and urged residents and tourists to participate.
