[Financial News] North Korea launched a ballistic missile by surprise toward the East Sea on the morning of the 3rd, carrying out another military provocation. The launch came 13 days after it fired short-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs) twice in one day from the Wonsan area on the 20th of last month. It was North Korea's 16th missile provocation of the year.
According to the Republic of Korea Joint Chiefs of Staff (ROK JCS), the South Korean military detected one ballistic missile launched from the Wonsan area toward the East Sea at around 6:30 a.m. The missile was assessed to have flown more than 700 kilometers, while South Korean and U.S. intelligence authorities are conducting a detailed analysis of its precise specifications. The military said it had tracked and shared related developments from the initial stage of the launch and was maintaining an overwhelming response posture while closely monitoring North Korea's various activities under a robust ROK-U.S. combined defense posture.
The provocation drew particular attention because it came just one day after the senior military leaders of South Korea and the United States reviewed their combined defense posture in response to North Korea's recent series of provocations. On the previous morning, newly appointed Defense Minister Kang Shin-chul visited Camp Humphreys for the first time since taking office and met with General Xavier T. Brunson, commander of the ROK-U.S. Combined Forces Command. The two countries' commanders reportedly discussed the antipersonnel mine explosion involving North Korean troops in the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) on the 21st of last month. After returning to the Ministry of National Defense in Seoul's Yongsan District that afternoon, Kang said, "I discussed various issues with Commander Brunson, including the mine explosion incident." The specific details of the discussion were not confirmed.
The latest provocation also appeared to be North Korea's renewed military response to President Lee Jae Myung's recent calls, including those made around Armed Forces Day, for easing military tensions between the two Koreas and establishing peace through dialogue.
In addition, analysts believe the launch was driven by political and military calculations aimed at increasing pressure on South Korea. Kim Yo Jong, head of the General Affairs Department of North Korea's Workers' Party, mocked the tone of President Lee Jae Myung's Armed Forces Day address the previous day by calling it "the second act of a self-produced clown show." She also dismissed the inter-Korean dialogue and communication proposed by Minister of Unification Chung Dong-young as "a delusion not worth responding to," strongly signaling North Korea's intention to continue fortifying the Military Demarcation Line (MDL).
Military experts assess that the provocation was intended both to demonstrate that North Korea would not be shaken by the ROK-U.S. combined deterrence posture and to thwart the new defense minister's attempt to seize the initiative against North Korea. The South Korean military is maintaining a thorough state of readiness.
