The Director of National Intelligence (DNI) is expected to also serve as the so-called AI czar, overseeing U.S. artificial intelligence policy and regulation.
According to The New York Times (NYT) and other foreign media outlets on the 2nd, local time, President Donald Trump plans to appoint Jay Clayton as AI czar.
The DNI oversees 18 U.S. intelligence agencies, including the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). Clayton is expected to retain his position at the DNI while also serving as AI czar.
He also attended the White House meeting between the president and the heads of AI companies on the 29th of last month. President Trump was reportedly receptive at the time to Clayton taking on the role of AI czar.
The AI czar will oversee the Trump administration's AI policies and regulations. However, NYT reported that it remains unclear what specific duties the position will entail, including whether reviewing new AI models and establishing safety standards will be part of the job.
The appointment comes amid a clash between industry calls for government coordination to rein in the pace of AI development, as concerns have even been raised that AI could lead to human extinction, and Trump's opposition based on the view that slowing down could allow China to overtake the United States.
Trump secured an agreement on industry self-regulation at the White House meeting, but the conflict over whether to slow the pace of AI development has not been fully resolved.
