[Financial News] U.S. President Donald Trump has once again unilaterally announced that an investment of $8.4 billion (approximately 11.3 trillion won) will be made in an oil production expansion project through negotiations with South Korea. The announcement came just two days after he presented an investment in the Alaska LNG Project as though it had already been finalized.
On the 2nd (local time), President Donald Trump posted on his social media platform Truth Social, saying, "I am very pleased to announce that negotiations with South Korea continue to get better," and claimed, "An $8.4 billion investment will be made in an enhanced oil recovery (EOR) project." EOR is a technology that increases crude oil production by injecting carbon dioxide and other substances into an oil field to raise internal pressure. Trump also stressed, "Increasing oil and gas production means U.S. energy dominance and energy security for the world of the future."
However, it remains unclear exactly which project the $8.4 billion EOR project mentioned by President Trump refers to, or whether an actual investment agreement has been reached between the two countries.
Earlier, on September 30, President Trump announced a $200 billion (approximately 271.4 trillion won) investment package by South Korea in the United States at the White House, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in attendance. He even provided specific figures for projects including a $22 billion gas-fired combined-cycle power plant in Encinal, Texas, eight large nuclear power plants worth $120 billion, and a $50 billion Alaska LNG pipeline project. Trump said, "The South Korean government will fully fund these projects for the benefit of the United States." However, the South Korean government has said that projects such as the Alaska LNG Project are still at the internal review stage, fueling controversy over the negotiation process.
This is not the first time President Trump has used this kind of social media preemptive disclosure. In February, he also unilaterally announced Japan's first investment project in the United States through social media. The second and third projects were officially announced a month later in the form of a joint statement immediately after his summit with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
