[Financial News, Jeonnam-Gwangju—Reporter Hwang Tae-jong] Min Hyung-bae, mayor of the Jeonnam-Gwangju Special Metropolitan City, said on the 2nd, "We will create an industrial ecosystem unique to Jeonnam-Gwangju, with semiconductors produced in Gwangju, materials and components supplied from the eastern region, and power supported by renewable energy in the western region," unveiling his 'Semiconductor Triangle' plan.
At the Future Industry Forum held that day at the Sono Calm Grand Ballroom in Yeosu, he presented a strategy for an 'industrial transformation' linking future industries such as quantum technology and secondary batteries around semiconductors. The special lecture was titled "100 Days of the Integrated Special Metropolitan City Changing Korea's Industrial Map."
According to Gwangju Metropolitan City, follow-up procedures are under way for the development of the Honam-region semiconductor cluster. These include finalizing the Gwangju military airport site, designating a candidate site for a national industrial complex, designating a preliminary project implementer, and signing a power supply agreement. The goal is to complete the fab in 2028 and begin production in 2030. In particular, the project has gained momentum since the launch of the Integrated Special Metropolitan City, thanks to the government's full support.
After Jeonnam-Gwangju was selected on September 1 for a national quantum cluster known as 'Next-AI,' the Gwangyang Bay Area was designated on September 30 as a national high-tech strategic industry specialized complex for secondary batteries. This is seen as laying the foundation for the 'industrial transformation.'
Mayor Min said in the special lecture, "Integration is not simply about expanding administrative districts; it is about bringing together Jeonnam-Gwangju's industries, talent, technologies, and resources to create a new framework for Korean industry." He stressed, "I will work with citizens to create a successful model of integration and innovation so that the achievements and benefits of integration reach citizens' lives."
Meanwhile, the Future Industry Forum was held under the theme "In the AI Era, Open a New Path to Growth Through the Power of Integration," with about 200 people in attendance, including Min Hyung-bae, mayor of Gwangju Metropolitan City; Yeosu Mayor Seo Young-hak; Gwangyang Mayor Park Sung Hyeon; local lawmakers; industry and economic representatives; and citizens.
