【Financial News | Jeju—Jeong Yong-bok, staff writer】 The public will choose the official slogan for the 79th Jeju 4·3 Victims Memorial Ceremony, incorporating the values of peace, human rights, reconciliation and coexistence into around 20 characters.
According to Jeju Special Self-Governing Province on the 2nd, entries for the slogan of the 79th Jeju 4·3 Victims Memorial Ceremony will be accepted through 6 p.m. on the 31st. Any Korean citizen may participate.
Entries must be written in Korean and contain approximately 20 characters, excluding spaces. Each person may submit only one entry.
The slogan should convey the historical lessons of the Jeju 4·3 uprising, as well as the values of peace, human rights, reconciliation and coexistence. Key evaluation criteria will also include whether the message can be remembered by all generations and promote the Jeju 4·3 uprising's spirit of peace to the world.
This year's contest particularly emphasizes passing the legacy on to future generations ahead of the 80th anniversary of the Jeju 4·3 uprising in 2028. The aim is to find a message that goes beyond remembering 4·3 as a tragedy of the past, allowing future generations to inherit its meaning and share peace and human rights as universal values.
To enter, applicants must download the application form from the announcement on the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Office website, fill in their personal information, slogan and explanation of its meaning, and submit it by email.
Judging is scheduled to take place in November. The evaluation criteria are clarity of expression, worth 40 points; originality, 30 points; and completeness, 30 points. The scores from a specially appointed judging committee will be added together, and the winners will be selected in order of their scores.

Eight entries will be selected. The grand prize winner will receive 1 million won, two excellence prize winners will each receive 500,000 won, and five encouragement prize winners will each receive 200,000 won. The total prize money is 3 million won.
The grand prize winner for the 75th anniversary was 'Jeju 4·3, having endured / 75 years, we stand tall'; for the 76th anniversary, 'Blow, spring breeze of 4·3; fly, seed of peace'; and for the 77th anniversary, 'The breath of 4·3 into history, the waves of peace to the world!'
For the 78th anniversary, three excellence prizes and five encouragement prizes were selected without a grand prize winner. The excellence prize entries were 'An unbid farewell to 4·3, creating a spring of peace together,' 'Jeju, blossomed through the spirit of 4·3, connects the world with the light of peace,' and 'Remembering the spirit of 4·3, carrying on the waves of peace.'
Recent slogans have expanded their meaning from the memory and truth of 4·3 to peace and human rights, future generations and the world. This year's contest will therefore place importance not only on originality of expression but also on how effectively each entry condenses a message that stands apart from previous slogans.
The results will be posted on the Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Office website by the end of this year, and winners will be notified individually. The prize money is scheduled to be paid in February next year.
The final winning slogan will serve as the official slogan of the 79th Jeju 4·3 Victims Memorial Ceremony. It will also be used on promotional arches and towers, banners, promotional materials and videos.
Byeon Yeong-geun, director of Jeju's Special Self-Governing Administrative Bureau, said, "I ask for the public's interest and participation so that the 79th memorial ceremony can share the lessons of 4·3 with future generations and become an occasion to deliver a message of hope for a better future."
